Acupuncture Mythbusting: The Truth About Acuncture
Acupuncture has been around for over 3,000 years — which means it’s also had about 3,000 years to accumulate some very persistent myths. We hear them from new clients all the time, and honestly, we get it. If you’ve never tried it, the whole “tiny needles, big results” thing sounds a little suspicious. So let’s clear the air.
❌ MYTH: “The needles hurt”
✅ TRUTH: They really, really don’t!
We know. It sounds impossible. But acupuncture needles are about the width of a human hair — nothing like the needles you’re imagining from your last blood draw. Most people feel a mild sensation (think: a tiny flicker or dull warmth) or nothing at all. The most common thing we hear post-session? “Wait, is it over already” A lot of people fall asleep on the table. Not exactly a torture device.
❌ MYTH: “It’s not backed by science”
✅ TRUTH: The research is very strong!
Acupuncture has been studied extensively in peer-reviewed journals, clinical trials, and systematic reviews. We’re talking NIH-funded research, randomized controlled trials, and meta-analyses covering everything from chronic pain and anxiety to fertility and perimenopause symptoms. The WHO recognizes it as an effective treatment for over two dozen conditions (!!). It’s not fringe, it’s just not talked about enough.
❌ MYTH: “It’s just placebo”
✅ TRUTH: Your endorphins are very real.
This one comes up a lot, and it’s fair to question it. Here’s what the research actually shows: acupuncture triggers measurable physiological responses — including the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other neurochemicals, changes in blood flow, and activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. These aren’t things you can fake with belief. Studies using functional MRI have documented how the brain responds to acupuncture needling in real time. Placebo effects are real, but they don’t explain all of the benefits of acu.
❌ MYTH: “It only works for pain”
✅ TRUTH: Pain is just the beginning.
Pain is probably acupuncture’s most popular use, but it’s one of many. Current research supports its use for anxiety and depression, fertility + IVF support, irregular cycles, perimenopause symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption), gut health issues like IBS and bloating, and more. If you came in for a bad back and left with better sleep and less anxiety, that’s not a coincidence. That’s your nervous system doing its thing :)
❌ MYTH: “One session should be enough”
✅ TRUTH: Your body needs time to learn. We wish we could promise one magic session and done. Acupuncture works cumulatively, so each treatment builds on the last, helping your body recalibrate and hold the shifts longer. For acute issues, you might notice results in just a few sessions. For chronic or hormonal concerns, a course of 6–12 sessions is where the real transformation tends to happen. Think of it like physical therapy or nutrition: consistency is what creates lasting change. We like to think of it like, one session is a treat, multiple are a treatment.
