our best fall skincare secrets

The weather is getting cooler, and with that crisp fall air can come skin surprises like dryness, surprise zits, itchiness, and redness. Our skin doesn't love sudden transitions, so we want to do everything we can to help ease it into the new season. Our holistic esthetician Kelly Liberty is sharing all of her glowy secrets, with a little help from our dietitians. Here are Kelly's recommendations:

  • Use cool water when washing your face. Even though it may feel great to take a steaming hot shower, hot water weakens your skin barrier, causing dehydration and inflammation.

  • Time to switch up your skin care products! With the change in weather, we need to compensate by adding more moisturizer into our routine. Keep it simple, you don't need a 10-step skin care (unless that brings you joy!) Here are a few simple product changes to make:

    • Switch to a more hydrating face wash. Regardless of season, your skin shouldn't feel tight and "squeaky clean" after washing your face! Look for a gentle, hydrating cleanser like Laurel's Effortless Cleanser.

    • Look for hydrating serums, mists and toners.  In many of our facials we use Laurel's Hydrating Elixer and Antioxidant Serum, which work to hydrate the skin together and leave you glowing.

    • Switch to a heavier moisturizer, especially at night. A night cream does the work for you as you sleep, leaving you nice and dewy when you wake up.

    • Don't forget sunscreen! Just because summer's over does not mean you should stop using it!

    • Pay attention to your lips too!

  • Add a humidifier to your house: By adding moisture to the air, you'll help moisturize your skin.

  • Add in a quick facial massage or Gua Sha to stimulate circulation & collagen, minimize fine lines, and reduce inflammation. This can really help products penetrate your skin. Instead of just quickly applying your products, take an extra five minutes and give yourself a facial massage. Not only will your skin feel more hydrated, but you'll see a difference in fine lines, complexion and lift.

  • Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate! You may not feel as thirsty as the weather cools down, so our dietitians recommend sipping on tea and warm water with lemon to hit ~64-80+ oz per day.

  • If your skin feels blah from the inside out, skip sugary treats and alcohol for 1-2 weeks to start. Reducing inflammatory foods and drinks can make a huge difference in your glow.

Kelly tells her clients to think of your skincare routine as a ritual: grab a cup of tea, put on some music or a podcast, and take 5-10 minutes for yourself. Remember, keep it simple, set up a skin routine and stick with it. And pay attention to your skin, you don't need to buy every (or any) product you see on Instagram. Better yet, come in for an IndiGLOW facial with Kelly where she can customize your skincare recommendations for the new season.
